Capture of CO2 in minerals

Nordic Mining and StatoilHydro have entered into a cooperationagreement for development of new technology for capture of CO2 in minerals.

The agreement comprises a joint program for development and testing of the use of CO2 in processing of various minerals, hence increasing the value of the extracted minerals. Further, this may contribute to reduction of CO2 to the atmosphere. New commercial mineral products may emerge from the technology development.

StatoilHydro and Nordic Mining shall jointly explore possibilities, conduct laboratory tests, and design a pilot plant which could lead to further industrial activity. The companies intend to utilise the experience and competence available in Norwegian and Nordic knowledge institutions.

Initially, the scope of work includes testing and development based on Nordic Mining's anorthosite deposit in Gudvangen in the Sogn and Fjordane county. Further, the companies will explore possibilities of CO2 capture, utilising eclogite from the Engebøfjellet rutile deposit, also in Sogn and Fjordane.
