The stone wool industry is representing the dominant industrial demand today, appreciating Gudvangen rock as portion of the feed to their processing plants. Other applications which the rock has been or can be used for are building materials, chemical applications such as water purifications and certain smelting functions.
Nordic Mining has together with StatoilHydro started to explore the possibilities for developing a production process based on carbon dioxide to use anorthosite from Gudvangen to make alumina for the aluminium industry, as well as other products based on the calcium and silicium content in the rock.
Locally the rock is called “ kvitberg”, - white rock, due to the bright colored mountains. The color is an important reason why the rock is well demanded for roads, parks, gardens and decoration purposes. The strength of the rock and the exceptional good polished stone value makes it also well demanded for top layer in asphalt on highways and streets in Europe.
